'ReSpectacle' Gallery Opening Poster

client: The NewBLK Gallery

While one part of the physical space at 'The NewBLK' is workspace for the creative work of the think-tank that resides there, the other half is utilized as gallery space for shows and exhibitions of various types. For their upcoming show, the cobbled-together word, "Respectacle", was batted about. Thus came the task of giving some meaning to the new word, adding some pedigree to the show and creating a corresponding visual representation. We stayed on course with word-play and went literal with it; the prefix "Re" means to have something occur again. "Spectacle" is a grand sight to be seen, has double meaning as an old word—from an antique lexicon—for a pair of glasses. Taking that a step farther, the word "Respect" prefixes the fictional word. So with several meanings awash, it can be loosely interpreted to "respect the vision", or to "look again at the grand visual" on display. So then to the visual representation; in recent history, nothing is more a "grand visual" than the hot-button of the moment—3D. But that's not yet endearing enough, so what of the old-school kitsch iteration of 3D?

The off-trapping motif made for interesting visuals, however the hidden gem is that this poster is interactive. From a distance the smaller, event information is not clearly visible, however the larger half-tone title reads well. As the reader gets closer, the dots begin to visually spread, breaking up the visibility of the title, pulling the event information forward, becoming more legible as the reader gets closer.

Use of the 'ReSpectacle' visual as an element on 'The NewBLK Gallery' site.
